Joseph C. Messina
Joseph C. Messina has been a practicing attorney for over 35 years and has extensive experience counseling a variety of clients from coast to coast in the protection of their creations and in obtaining trademark registrations, whether a single mark or a part of a portfolio, both at the United States Patent and Trademark Office and internationally. He also specializes in the negotiation of entertainment related contracts including artist management, licensing and merchandising, music and book publishing, music production and recording agreements.
In addition to intellectual property matters and the negotiation of entertainment oriented contracts, his general business acumen and legal knowledge, as well as his continued successful business ventures, have benefited clients in a variety of matters from those involving retail, sales and restaurant businesses to commercial and real estate law and related litigation including zoning, planning, initial state court litigation, appellate litigation and federal land use civil rights litigation.
As an attorney his foremost goal has always been to provide the best available legal and business advice in order to protect his clients’ creations and rights, whether by copyright registration, licensing agreements, contract negotiation, applying for and obtaining trademark registrations or by a combination thereof. Most important however, is that his approach in disputed matters is to counsel with his clients, initially emphasizing calculated negotiation whenever possible, rather than relying on litigation which is always a backup option to an amicable resolution.
A musician, arranger/producer and artist manager himself, Mr. Messina has worked with such notables as The Four Seasons, Kenny Rogers, The Serendipity Singers, Jackie Wilson, B.J.Thomas, Dr.John and James Brown. He is the recipient of a gold record for his management of the successful recording artist Steam ( “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye”) a recording which produced international sales of well over six million copies. This highly recognizable song has long since become a favorite fan anthem at sporting events across the world. In addition, he has also received a Grammy nomination as project attorney for his work on the album which included the last recorded performance by jazz legend Art Blakey.
He earned his Juris Doctor degree from Fordham University School of Law, his Masters degree from Yale University and his undergraduate degree from New York University.
He is a member of the New York State and American Bar Associations and is also admitted to practice in the United States Federal District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.
